Sock burning is a maritime custom celebrating the arrival of Spring and the start of boating season by ceremoniously burning winter socks. The tradition began in Annapolis in the late 1970s, to bid a not-so-fond farewell to the harsh winter of 1977-78. This act of defiance against the gloom of winter has become a communal celebration among sailors, boat builders and watermen – marking the start of Spring and the local boating season. As West View Shores friends and neighbors, let’s get together and kick Winter to the curb.
